Want to transform an ordinary fireplace wall into something elegant and dazzling?  Consider gilding.  A few weeks back interior designer Patricia Gifford-Crocker asked me to gild a client’s fireplace wall.  It made a rather ordinary backdrop into the focal piece of the room.

The process involved several steps.  First I skimmed the wall, making sure the texture of the wall was smooth and even.  Next I primed and painted it.  Then I gilded it with composite gold leaf.  And lastly, I finished it off with a seal coat.

It might sound like it would be too much, but gilding done the right way can be tasteful and artful.  It gives a living room or study a stunning, warm centerpiece.

A little gilding can absolutely transform an entire room.
