Working on a large portrait

This is a project from when I was at Cobalt Studios.  There, I was a student studying theatrical backdrop painting.  Relative to most of what we did, this was small.  But it was a good study for reproducing old master’s painting.  Start with burnt umber and ultramarine and then layer in color once you have the warm and cool gray scale.  At the time I had no idea how important this technique would be.  Later I reproduced many works for movies.  I’m sure some of them are floating around in prop houses still.
